Marpe

Marpe

For many teenagers and young adults with narrow upper jaws, finding a non-surgical treatment can seem like a pipe dream.  Thanks to MARPE, contemporary orthodontics thankfully provides just that.

What is MARPE?

Mini Screw-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion is referred to as MARPE. Small titanium screws that are secured into the palate are used in this minimally invasive technique to assist expand the upper jaw. MARPE uses skeletal anchorage, which makes it appropriate even for post-pubertal patients, in contrast to conventional expanders that depend on tooth anchorage (and only function well in youngsters).

Why Would You Need MARPE?

Cross bites, in which the upper teeth bite within the lower teeth, and tooth crowding are two conditions that can result from a narrow upper jaw.

• Breathing issues, frequently brought on by a narrowed nasal airway

• Mild sleep apnea or snoring

In addition to improving your smile, MARPE can improve nasal airflow and facial symmetry by enlarging the upper jaw.

How Does the Procedure Work?

1. A specially made expander is fastened to the roof of the mouth using four tiny micro screws.

 2. To gradually widen the mid-palatal suture, the patient (or parent) applies little pressure while rotating a screw in the appliance once a day.

 3. The upper jaw enlarges over a few weeks, enhancing alignment and making room.

Benefits of MARPE

  • Avoids surgical intervention
  • Improves both dental and airway health
  • Suitable for older teens and adults
  • Promotes better long-term stability

Is It Painful?

Although it’s usually well accepted, there might be some slight pressure or discomfort at the beginning. Your orthodontist will keep an eye on your development and help you navigate the expansion stage.

Final Thoughts

For patients who require structural correction but missed the window for standard palatal extension, MARPE offers a contemporary, secure, and efficient option.  MARPE may be the ideal solution for you if you have airway problems, crowding, or a narrow jaw.

Frequently Asked Questions

MARPE can be moderately expensive, typically ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the provider, location, and complexity of the case. While it’s an investment, many find it worthwhile for the long-term benefits in jaw expansion, breathing improvement, and avoiding more invasive surgical procedures later on.

Risks of MARPE include temporary pain, swelling, or discomfort, minor bleeding, and irritation of the palate. In rare cases, it may cause root damage, infection, or failure to achieve full expansion. Proper care and expert supervision minimize these risks, making it generally safe and effective for most patients.

MARPE treatment typically lasts 3 to 6 months for expansion, depending on the patient’s age and jaw structure. After expansion, a retainer or braces may be needed for alignment and stabilization, which can extend the overall orthodontic treatment time to 12–24 months for full results.
